A new $35,000 gasoline car from an Oklahoma dealer costs $1,684 in taxes and Service Oklahoma fees: $1,138 of motor vehicle excise tax (3.25%, rounded to the dollar), $438 of state sales tax at 1.25%, the $11 title, the $1.50 insurance verification fee and $96 for the first year of registration. Cities and counties cannot add their sales tax to a vehicle, so the total is the same in Tulsa and in Guymon. A trade-in only lowers the 1.25% part: with $10,000 traded in, the sales tax falls to $313 while the excise stays $1,138. A used car is taxed differently, $20 on the first $1,500 of value and 3.25% above it, so an $18,000 car from 2021 bought from a dealer costs $880. The plate is $96 again next year and gets cheaper with age. An electric car adds a $100 fee each year, $1,784 at purchase.

Excise tax: what changed on July 1, 2026

The motor vehicle excise tax is due whenever ownership of a registered vehicle changes and when a car is first registered in Oklahoma. New vehicles pay 3.25% of their value. Used vehicles pay a flat $20 on the first $1,500 and 3.25% on the rest, and the result is rounded to the nearest dollar. Until June 30, 2026 the price on the bill of sale had to fall within 20% of the average retail value in Service Oklahoma's reference guide. Since July 1, 2026 the value is simply the actual sales price, which helps buyers who pay less than book value. The Legislature removed the old wording that taxed the price before trade-in credits, but the new text does not grant a credit either, so our calculator keeps the excise on the full price.

The 1.25% state sales tax

Since 2017, vehicle sales have also carried part of the state sales tax: 1.25% of the gross receipts, calculated on the difference between the price and the trade-in. Local sales taxes do not apply to vehicles. For a private sale, the statutes we read do not say whether the tag agent collects this 1.25%, so the calculator shows it as a range.

Plates that get cheaper with age

Service Oklahoma charges $96 a year for the first four years of registration, $86 for years five to eight, $66 for nine to twelve, $46 for thirteen to sixteen and $26 after that. Electric cars add $100 a year and plug-in hybrids $30, a motor fuels tax fee created in 2017. There are no safety or emissions inspections to budget for. Next door, Texas taxes a car at 6.25% but registers it for about half the price.

What sets Oklahoma apart

  • Oklahoma's main tax on a car purchase is a motor vehicle excise tax of 3.25% of the value of a new vehicle, collected when the title is issued (68 O.S. § 2103).
  • A used vehicle pays $20 on the first $1,500 of value and 3.25% of the rest, and the excise tax is rounded to the nearest dollar (68 O.S. § 2103).
  • From July 1, 2026 the excise tax is based on the actual sales price written on the bill of sale, no longer checked against a 20% band around the average retail value (68 O.S. § 2104).
  • On top of the excise tax, a 1.25% state sales tax applies to vehicle sales, computed on the price less the trade-in, and cities and counties may not add their sales tax to a vehicle (68 O.S. § 1355(2)).
  • Registration costs $96 a year for the first four years of registration, then $86, $66, $46 and finally $26 from the 17th year (Service Oklahoma).
  • The statutory registration fee behind those amounts is $85 for years one to four, falling to $15 from the 17th year, plus small dedicated fees (47 O.S. § 1132).
  • Electric cars pay a $100 motor fuels tax fee each year and plug-in hybrids $30; ordinary hybrids pay nothing extra (47 O.S. § 1132.7).
  • A certificate of title costs $11, and Service Oklahoma adds a $1.50 insurance verification fee at the first registration (Service Oklahoma).
  • Since September 1, 2024 buyers pre-register within two business days, must put a metal plate on the car within ten days and fully register within two months of the sale (Service Oklahoma).

What the Oklahoma calculation cannot know

  • Since July 1, 2026 the excise tax is based on the actual sales price (Laws 2025, c. 252 removed the 20% band around the average retail value). The former text taxed the price before any trade-in credit; the new text no longer says so either way, so the engine keeps taxing the full price and does not deduct the trade-in from the excise tax.
  • The 1.25% sales tax on vehicles is levied on sales and computed after the trade-in; the texts read do not say whether Service Oklahoma collects it on a private sale, so it is shown as a range from $0 to 1.25% of the price on a private sale.
  • The year of registration is counted from the model year; Service Oklahoma counts registrations in this state or any other state, which can differ for an older import.
  • Service Oklahoma lists a $17 transfer fee, a $4 VIN inspection fee for out-of-state vehicles and a tire tax that varies by vehicle among the additional initial registration fees without saying when each applies; they are not added.
  • No legal cap on dealer documentation fees was found in the Oklahoma statutes read; type the dealer's fee.
  • The Oklahoma State Courts Network (OSCN) did not respond for this release; statutes were read in the complete Title 47 and Title 68 files published by the Oklahoma Legislature.

Questions buyers ask

How is Oklahoma excise tax calculated on a used car?

Service Oklahoma charges $20 on the first $1,500 of the vehicle value and 3.25% of the value above $1,500, rounded to the nearest dollar. Since July 1, 2026 the value is the actual sales price on the bill of sale. An $18,000 used car therefore owes $556 of excise tax.

Do cities add sales tax to a car bought in Oklahoma?

No. State law says the sale of motor vehicles is not subject to any sales or use tax levied by cities, counties or other local jurisdictions. A buyer pays only the 3.25% excise tax and the 1.25% state sales tax, whatever city the car is registered in, plus the title and plate fees.

What is the Oklahoma fee for electric and plug-in hybrid cars?

Oklahoma adds a motor fuels tax fee to every registration: $100 a year for a car propelled only by electricity and $30 for a plug-in hybrid with a battery of at least 4 kilowatt-hours that can be charged from an outside source. Ordinary hybrids that cannot plug in pay no extra fee.
