A new $35,000 gasoline car bought from a Miami-Dade dealer costs $2,497 in taxes and fees at purchase, before any dealer fee: $2,100 of 6% state sales tax, $50 of county surtax (1% on the first $5,000 only), the $75.75 title, the $225 initial registration fee charged when there is no Florida plate to transfer onto the car, and $46 of registration for a car of 3,500 pounds or more, add-on fees included. After that the yearly renewal is just the weight fee, from $28.10 to $46.10 for a car. Florida has no inspection and no yearly tax on the car's value. The dealer fee is not capped: Florida only requires a printed disclosure on every document where it appears, and the fee is taxed with the car.
The $225 that buyers do not expect
Florida charges a one-time $225 initial registration fee whenever a car is registered without a Florida plate that can be moved onto it. A first-time Florida buyer, or a newcomer from another state, pays it; someone replacing a car they already registered in Florida can usually transfer the plate and avoid it. On a cheap used car, this fee can exceed the yearly registration several times over. The county tax collector fee schedule lists it at the top.
A county surtax that stops at $5,000
Every Florida county may levy a discretionary sales surtax, and on cars it applies only to the first $5,000 of the price, as section 212.054 of the Florida Statutes provides. The highest rate in 2026 is Hamilton County's, and Citrus County and Collier County levy none, according to the Department of Revenue table for 2026. The surtax follows the county on your registration, not the dealer's county. On an $18,000 used car bought privately in Orange County, the state tax is $1,080 and the surtax $25.
Weight, not value
Florida prices registration by weight in three automobile classes, with light trucks in their own brackets. A heavy electric SUV of 4,600 pounds pays the top automobile rate, $46 a year, the same as any car of 3,500 pounds or more, and no EV surcharge was found in the fee schedules read for this site. Because the value does not matter, a $90,000 car and a $25,000 car of the same weight renew for the same amount.
What sets Florida apart
- Florida's county surtax on a car applies only to the first $5,000 of the price, so it can never add more than $100 even in a 2% county (Florida Statutes 212.054).
- The surtax follows the county on the buyer's registration address, not the county where the dealer sits (Florida Statutes 212.054).
- A buyer without a Florida plate to move pays a one-time $225 initial registration fee on top of the regular registration (Pinellas County Tax Collector).
- Registration is priced by weight in three automobile classes: under 2,500 lb, 2,500 to 3,499 lb, and 3,500 lb and up (Pinellas County Tax Collector).
- A Florida title transfer costs $75.75 when processed electronically, plus a $20 late fee after 30 days (Pinellas County Tax Collector).
- Florida has no safety or emissions inspection for ordinary passenger cars (Pinellas County Tax Collector).
- Florida deducts a trade-in from the taxable price, and the dealer's predelivery fee counts as part of the price (Florida Statutes 212.09 (trade-ins deducted) and 212.02(16) (sales price)).
- There is no legal cap on Florida dealer fees, but each document must carry a printed disclosure that the charge is dealer profit and cost (Florida Statutes 501.976(18)).
What the Florida calculation cannot know
- The FLHSMV fee pages refuse automated readers; registration and title amounts are taken from the Pinellas County Tax Collector, which publishes the state schedule with the add-on fees included.
- The license plate issuance fee charged with a new plate is not included (no official amount read).
- Trucks of 5,000 lb and more are charged by gross vehicle weight, which the form does not ask: the engine uses the 3,001-4,999 lb amount and says so.
