A new $35,000 gasoline car bought from a Michigan dealer costs $2,628 in taxes and fees at purchase: $2,117 of 6% sales tax on the price and the taxable $280 documentary fee, the $15 title transfer fee, a $208 plate fee read from the state’s list-price table, $8 of regulatory and administration fees, and the documentary fee itself, capped at $280. The plate fee follows the MSRP, not the deal: a car listed at $52,000 starts at $310. It then shrinks three times by 10%, so the same $35,000 car renews for about $195 in its second year and $152 from its fourth year. A $15,000 trade-in lowers the tax to $1,397, because only $12,000 of it counts in 2026. An electric car adds a $267 fee every year, so a new EV pays $2,895 at purchase. Michigan has no vehicle inspection.
The plate fee: a list-price table with three discounts
For a car of the 1984 model year or later, section 801 of the Michigan Vehicle Code sets the yearly registration tax from the manufacturer’s suggested base list price: $36 up to $6,000, then a step of $6 for every $1,000, reaching $178 at $30,000 and adding $6 per $1,000 or fraction above that. The second registration costs 90% of the first, the third 90% of the second, and every later year 90% again; after that the fee no longer falls, however old the car. Until October 1, 2027, $2.25 and $5.75 are added for highway safety regulation and administration. A new plate expires on your birthday, so the first payment is usually prorated.
Sales tax and a trade-in credit that is still capped
The tax is 6% of the price, with the documentary fee counted as a taxable charge. The trade-in credit is limited by law: $5,000 in 2019, raised by $1,000 each January, so $12,000 in 2026 and $13,000 in 2027. Once the amount would pass $14,000 the limit disappears. A car bought from a private seller is taxed at 6% when you transfer the title, with exemptions for close family members, and the transfer should happen within 15 days to avoid a $15 late fee.
Electric cars after the 2026 fuel tax change
The motor fuel tax was reset on January 1, 2026, at 51 cents a gallon adjusted for inflation, and the law ties the EV fee to that rate: $5 for each cent above 19 cents a gallon, on top of a $100 base. The result is $267 a year for an electric car and $113 for a plug-in hybrid. The fee will move again whenever the fuel tax is re-indexed. Hybrids that do not plug in pay nothing extra. For a neighbor that charges a flat EV fee, see Wisconsin, and compare all states on the EV fee table.
What sets Michigan apart
- Michigan's plate fee for a 1984 or newer car is a tax on the list price: $178 a year at $30,000, plus $6 for each $1,000 or fraction above (MCL 257.801).
- The plate tax falls only three times: 90% of the first-year tax in the second year, then 90% of that, then 90% again for every later year (MCL 257.801).
- Until October 1, 2027, each plate also carries a $2.25 regulatory fee and a $5.75 transportation administration fee (MCL 257.801).
- The trade-in credit against the 6% sales tax was $5,000 in 2019 and grows by $1,000 every January, so it reaches $12,000 in 2026 and becomes unlimited once it would exceed $14,000 (MCL 205.51).
- The documentary preparation fee a dealer may charge is capped at 5% of the cash price or $280, whichever is less, under the 2025 adjustment (Michigan DIFS).
- A title transfer costs $15 and the sales or use tax is 6 percent; a $15 late fee applies after 15 days (Michigan Department of State).
- Electric cars pay $267 a year on top of the plate fee and plug-in hybrids $113, because the fuel tax rose on January 1, 2026 (Michigan Department of State).
- The electric surcharge is tied to the gasoline tax by law: $5 for each cent above 19 cents a gallon for an EV, $2.50 for a plug-in hybrid (MCL 257.801).
- The Department of State tells dealers that the documentary preparation fee is taxable and goes on the title application with the other taxable charges (Michigan Department of State).
- Most plates expire on the owner's birthday and can be renewed up to six months in advance (Michigan Department of State).
What the Michigan calculation cannot know
- The registration tax is computed on the manufacturer's suggested base list price published by the Secretary of State; when the MSRP is not typed, the engine uses the price, which understates the tax of a discounted new car and of any used car.
- A new plate expires on the owner's birthday, so the first registration is prorated by month; the engine shows a 12-month amount.
- The electric and plug-in hybrid fees follow the motor fuel tax, re-indexed every January 1; only the 2026 amounts ($267 and $113) are published, so a renewal in 2027 or later is shown without an amount.
- On a private sale the 6% use tax is computed on the price declared; the Department of Treasury makes the final determination.
- The optional Recreation Passport ($15 a year) offered with registration is not added.
- The $2.25 regulatory fee and $5.75 administration fee expire on October 1, 2027 under current law; the engine keeps them through 2027 and drops them for later years.
